Flu Prevention

With our new extended flu season, I would like to remind everyone of the best way to prevent the spread of not only flu but colds also. Be sure to remind your child the importance of proper hand-washing, not sharing food or drinks, and covering their face (with their arm) when sneezing or coughing. If your student does get sick, here are a few guidelines when deciding to keep your student home:

  • A fever of 100 degrees Fahrenheit or more they should be kept home until they are fever free for 24 hours.
  • Vomiting that day.
  • More than one loose stool.
  • Rash with or without a fever, until a doctor has determined the rash is not contagious.
  • Pink eye, until examined by a doctor and determined not to be contagious or until on antibiotics for 24 hours.
  • Head lice, until the day after the first treatment (please notify the school nurse).
  • Chicken pox, until all pox sores have dried and crusted (a minimum of 5 days after onset).
  • Any other bacterial infection or communicable condition (must be on antibiotics for 24 hours or until released by doctor).

When should I keep my child home from school?

IN ORDER to provide a safe and healthy environment for all our students, we ask that you keep your child home anytime he or she exhibits any of the following symptoms:

  • Fever within the last 24 hours
  • Vomiting and/or diarrhea with the last 24 hours
  • Runny nose with any color discharge
  • Sore throat
  • Any unexplained rash
  • Any skin infection
  • Pinkeye or any other eye infection
  • Head lice (child should be free of all nits)

When a Child Stays home from School Due to Illness:

  • Specify the reason when you call to inform the school.
  • Inform the school when you call, if a doctor has diagnosed your child with strep throat, pink eye, or the flu (specify which type),  This will assist the school in performing the proper actions to inform parents and to disinfect classrooms.
  • A doctor's note is required if your child has been absent for 3 or more consecutive days.

*5th grade students no longer need a physical. Requirement has changed to 6th grade, however students still will need Hep B vaccinations by 5th grade.

*HEAD LICE PREVENTION/SCREENING CHECKS*

We encourage parents to regularly check your child's hair and scalp for signs of head lice. Anyone can get head lice. The earliest and the most common symptom head lice infestation is itching, particularly in the area behind the ears and at the nape of the neck. Lice are small insects about the size of a sesame seed. They do not transmit communicable diseases. They do not jump or fly; they can only crawl. Nits (lice eggs) are tiny white or grayish in color and look and feel like little grains of sand stuck to the hair. Dandruff can be easily flicked away with your finger, nits cannot. If you find your child does have head lice, please inform the school so a check can be made on the other students in the class. If a student is found to have head lice, a parent will be notified to promptly pick their student up from school and begin treatment. Please contact the school nurse for additional information on head lice prevention, identification or treatment.

The school nurse, along with some parent volunteers, conducted a school wide head lice check during October, the week after Winter break and the week after Spring break.

Please contact the school nurse if you have any questions on head lice prevention, identification or treatment.

Thank you for your cooperation!!
